Sub Genre

Extreme splatterpunk, grindhouse or visceral)

This sub genre is as raw as fiction or film can be. The explicit violence and bloody gore are heaped on, often from start to finish.Splatterpunk is a term coined in imitation of cyberpunk, and favored by certain younger authors. Often these stories incorporate technology.
Viceral is in between these two subgenres, and its stories aim for an "in your face" gross-out. The typical characters which are used are the smart guy, the stoner (the sinner), the 'slutty girl', the virgin, the jock and the good guy. usually the virgin is the one which survives.

A great example of this would be The movie 'The Cabin in the woods'. All the characters mentioned are included in this movie.

Zombieland Title Sequence Analysis

Mise en scene

Zombieland

This scene shows a zombie pouncing on a person who is running away from it. It has been shot from the point of view of the person running and the shot is low angle close up of the zombie on his body eating his flesh. The reason this shot has been used is because it give the zombie a great deal of power making him seem more intimidating and ruthless. The most distinct colour used in this shot is red, the red is shown from the blood and wounds of the zombie. The connotations of the colour red are pain, blood and anger and I believe that applies to this scene. Sounds such as screams from the person being attacked and grunts and munches being made by the zombie are all diegetic and are effective for making this scene more tense and realistic. This scene is set on a street with destroyed and exploding vehicles this helps the scene seem more dramatic. Natural lighting has been used to portray the zombie in more detail so that it can scare or discomfort the viewer early in the movie. The make-up used on the zombie to make him seem more terrifying is fake open wounds around his face and head and fake blood covering his face. He also seems to have meat in his mouth from the person he is eating. The actor used to be a zombie seems to look like an average middle aged man which would imply that every is in danger.

This scene shows an overweight man running away from the zombie which is chasing him and is in the background in this scene and out of focus. A mid-shot is used in this scene to show the expression on the boy’s face and to show the zombie that is behind him. This scene takes place on a football field which is ironic because the boy is running away from person down the field, which is what would occur in the sport. The time of day this scene was shot at seems to be at night however the stadium lights are on giving the scene a source of light, which also allows the viewer to see what is occurring in this scene in detail. The make has been used on the zombie and we see the typical blood on the zombies face and clothes. This allows the viewers to determine that this is a zombie. An average fat teenage boy is used to show how vulnerable
they are when a zombie apocalypse occurs.

A high angle shot has been used to show a man sitting on a toilet. This angle makes him seem weak and vulnerable. This scene is set in a public toilet and this particular shot is set in a cubicle. They use this setting to express how vulnerable anyone is when they are on the toilet. A small amount of lighting is focused on the cubicle to draw the viewer’s attention to it. Violins are played slowly in the background to gain tension to the scene then a sharp loud clash of noise is used as the zombie appears to startle and surprise the viewer. The sound used is non diegetic. The director purposely chose an actor that looks weak and vulnerable for this scene to emphasize how weak anyone can be in this situation.

The main colour used in this scene is grey, the connotations of grey are bland, dull and boring. They use these connotations to surprise the viewer as the woman glides across the ground spraying blood on the floor. A bird’s eye view long shot of the ground is used to fit everything in screen and show the entirety of the woman’s glide cross the ground. It also leaves space for the text that is shown in this scene which is rough, bold and dirty like the road. The text was used to blend into the road. The setting of this scene is at a road which is used to express the dangers of the road. The woman in this scene is made out to look like a mother. We get evidence of this from the way she dresses, the way she looks and her car. Diegetic sound has been used to surprise the viewers as the woman crashes her car against the lorry.

The main colour in the this scene is green. The colour green has connotation of nature, grass and good. This is in contrast of the action which is occurring in this scene. The shot used is a mid shot of the man. The mid shot is used to fit his body, his weapon and the zombies in the background. The setting is not made very clear because the background is blurred and there is plants covering most of the background. The effects of this are that it creates a sense of mystery about where this scene is taking place. The zombies, as usual are made to look disgusting and threatening with fake blood and wounds on their body's and face's. Diegetic sound is used for the smashing of the glass in this scene. The title used in this scene is bold, capital and red. Red is used to represent the blood in this scene. The capitals and the bold in the title is used to draw attention to it.

Alien 3 Title Sequence Analysis

Mise en scene

Alien 3

The main colour used in this scene is white which represents purity, hope and brightness. The shot that was used was a mid-shot with the further woman in focus and the other out of focus. The reason they used this shot was to show the characters body to emphasize the relaxed state she is in. The constant use of white makes it seem that the women in this scene are in a hospital. This would imply that they are recuperating from an injury or something along that matter. The lighting is dim in this scene which could imply that it is late at night. The sound used is non-diegetic and is played in the background to add a tone to the movie. The actor has been portrayed as an average woman, which would make her relatable to most women.

This scene shows a close up of a woman’s face (which is out of focus) as she is lying down and sleeping and an alien approaching to her slowly. The reason this shot is used is to draw the viewer’s attention to the alien (which is in focus) slowly approaching her face.  This scene also has a constant use of white makes it seem that the woman in this scene is in a hospital. The lighting is dim in this scene which could imply that it is late at night. The sound used is non-diegetic and is played in the background to add a tone to the movie. The actor has been
portrayed as an average woman, which would make her relatable to most women.

In this scene there is an acid spill on the floor which seems to be tearing right through it. They use a close up to present this scene in more detail for the viewer. The colour of the acid is green which is the same colour as the alien from the previous scene, which could get the audience thinking that it came from the alien. It is in the same setting as the previous scene and the lighting is dim to give the sense of darkness and mystery. The sound remains slow paced to set the pace of the film early on. However there was also a diegetic sound effect added to this scene, the sound is a loud fizzing noise to link with the acid pouring and going through the floor.

An extreme close up on a woman’s eyes, nose and part of her mouth has been used to show the woman’s emotions and expressions in great detail. The main colour used in this scene is red. There seems to be red lights lighting all around the covering the whole scene in a red tint. The connotations of the red tint in this scene would be danger, fire and pain. The sound used in this scene is alarms blaring loudly to give a sense of urgency and danger to the scene which makes it much more dramatic and interesting. The actor has been portrayed as a vulnerable woman. This would get the viewer feeling worried and frightened for her.  Although there is a red tinted light surrounding the whole scene, it’s not a very bright light so you do get that
sense of darkness.

This scene shows a part of the ship that is in space comes off and starts falling to a planet which is shot from an extreme long shot. The reason they used this shot is because it displayed the text, planet and shuttle in one shot without making it seem like there is too much going on in the scene. The music in the background reaches its dramatic climax as we almost reach the end of the title sequence. This gets the audience exited for there is to come in the movie. The text used in this scene is bright and a light blue colour, this helps it blend into the planet and makes it seem more of a part in the scene.

Dawn Of The Dead Title Sequence Analysis

Mise en scène

Dawn of the Dead

A very sharp transition leads to this scene. The main colours used in this shot are black and white which resembles old, light and dark. The way it is used in the shot is to create mystery in what that thing is in the shot; you can’t see it in great detail and you don’t know exactly what it is which makes the thin immediately much more frightening. The shot that has been used is a mid/ long shot to show the things body so that they can show off more aspects of it. It also shows a bit of the background to get a vague idea of where this what shot. I personally believe it is a doll that is intended to look like a disfigured body of some kind. There seems to be a large ray of light passing into the room from the right of the shot allowing us to see more of the thing. The sound made just as this shot appears is a sharp and load screaming sound used to shock
and scare the viewer.

A very sharp transition leads to this scene. The main colour used in this shot is red, which resembles pain, blood and anger. The shot used to capture this moment is a close up that has been tilted to the side attracting the viewer’s attention to the zombie’s mouth so that you can see the expressions in more detail. Fake blood has been used all over the mouth and in the mouth, to give the impression that it has been eating. This also could show that it is in terrible pain. The sounds made in this scene seem to be sharp, high pitch screams followed by a low shout. I believe they used these sounds to surprise the viewers and scare them. The sound also seems to be diegetic. The actor has been portrayed in a very frightening and disturbing manner. The actor has been portrayed this way to scare the viewers. I believe natural light has been used to portray the actor in this scene; it seems to be quite bright and shining at her face to show off the make up in great detail. You don’t see much of the background so you can’t
really tell where this shot has been taken.

The previous scene is followed by an extremely quick transition in and out of this next scene which could easily be missed. It shows an extreme close up of a zombie’s mouth. The reason they used an extreme close up was so that the viewer could get a quick jump scare. Again, blood has been used inside the mouth and on the teeth to resemble that this zombie may have been eating. A sharp high pitch sound which sounds like someone screaming. The zombies face takes up the entire screen so I can’t say much about the background. Normal bright light has been used to shine on the zombies face to show the blood to the viewers. The main colour used in this shot is red, which resembles pain, blood and anger.

The colours used are bland and washed out in this scene; the main colour which is used in this scene is white. Now white could resemble lots of things but for me personally it resembles hope, freedom and heaven. A long shot has been used in this scene to show off what is in the background and what is going on in the background. The security personnel seem to be wearing protective clothing and sun glasses making them seem powerful and let’s face it quite awesome however there are men and women in that group of people that look valuable because they have no protection other than the guards. The space has been cleverly used to allow space for the things in the background and still have a slot of space in front of that for carnage to ensue. The actors in this scene are made to look rich because of what they are wearing and how much protection and attention is given to them from the security. Natural sun
light has been used to provide the lighting in this scene.

This scene shows a zombie running strait towards the camera. The shot used is a mid-shot and it is eye-level. This shot is used to focus our attention to the zombie as he is running towards the camera and to make it seem as though he is running right towards the viewer. The make-up used on the zombie is mainly ripped skin and blood which is mainly used to discomfort the viewer and make the zombie seem more threatening. The sounds made seem to the sound of a dog growling these sounds can from the zombie to make him seem more intimidating. A small amount of the background is shown however that is all that is needed to show the havoc that is going on in the room, behind the zombie. This creates tension before the zombie even attacks the cameraman.

Prelim Evaluation

Evaluation

Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media product?

Our media product mainly conforms to the conventions of real media products. We followed the 180 rule, used the match on match action and made good use of shot reverse shot. We also used a close up of the face to express the actor’s emotions and create tension at the end of the video. The use of the shot reverse shot has been used in the traditional fashion in the conversation that takes place in our media product. Things that we could have improved on are the smoothness of the transitions in the match on match action. The match on match action is unnaturally fast which make it seem unrealistic. This is something we definitely need to iron out in our main task. We also used a black and white filter throughout the whole video. The main reason we used this filter was because we filmed parts of the video on different days and the lighting looked drastically different on both parts and the filter did not show the change of lighting. However I don't think that I would use this filter on my main task. However another criticism I could make about our prelim is that we had a continuity error which we would definitely avoid doing in the main task. Our continuity error was in the form of a jumper which was worn by one of the actors. He forgot to bring in the clothes that he wore for the previous days which meant that we had to improvise, so he was given a different jumper we did the second half of the shots with a different jumper. This is not healthy for the video because it can draw the viewer’s attention away from the video and onto the flaw.
Q2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our media product the social group we were representing was London Gang members. The members involved are a powerful Gang leader and a rookie teenage gang member. The way we represented the Gang leader to establish that he has power is that we made him ware sophisticated clothing, we made him do most of the talking and finally he made his order to his gang member. We portrayed his confidence in the way he spoke and acted. On the other hand the gang novice was represented as any other novice London gang member. We showed this in the way that he dressed and in the way that he acted. He was acting very nervous throughout giving the leader all of the power.

Q3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that Vertigo films would be the perfect producer to distribute our media product because they are a British producer with a lot of experience. They have a large range of different films that they have produced and most of them are based in the UK which is perfect because our movie sequence is based in London. Examples of films that Vertigo Films produced are the football factory and the Sweeney which are both set in London.

Q4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our media product would be partly British teenagers and mostly adults. I believe that our media product would relate to British teens because this scene is based in London and there are people who have experienced the life of belonging to a Gang in Britain or know people who do.  However I believe that adults are the main target audience because our movie scene has a serious and dramatic tone to it which is reflected from the effects, the lighting, the setting and the acting.

Q5: how did you attract/ address your audience?

Well seeing as our main target audience are mature, urban adults from the UK. We attracted them to our video by including a serious story with tense and dramatic moments to keep the audience interested and exited. We used a bland and sophisticated video filter to go throughout the whole scene to express the gritty realistic sense of belonging to a Gang which I believe connected well with the audience. The scene where the gang leader talks to the rookie at his desk in an office would probably relate to adults more because it would remind them of the meetings they have had with their bosses.

Q6:  What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During This project, I have encountered some new technologies and improved my skill on the ones I was already familiar with. I learnt how to use IMovie although we had mainly one person doing most of the editing I soon learnt the basics of editing on IMovie and contributed in editing our prelim task. I also enhanced my skills in filming by filming some of the scenes in our prelim. We used a stand most of the time to keep the camera steady. I also have learnt how to use blogger, a site I haven't even heard of before I took media. I'm still learning how to use it perfectly but I think I got the hang of the basics.
